The freediver

Although limited by his or her ability to hold their breath, the freediver can be very stealthy and easily blend into the environment. This will often allow the diver to get very close to a variety of otherwise cautious fish.

Freediving

Is simply a method of diving without the assistance of SCUBA equipment? While freediving may also include static apnea and snorkeling, it usually implies the diver is making descent(s) down into the water while holding their breath.

The majority of serious freedivers are usually engaged in spearfishing or apnea diving. Traditionally spearfishing activities took place near shallow features, but today blue water hunters often venture far offshore to hunt large pelagic fish including yellowfin tuna over 200 pounds. Apnea diving is the type of freediving seen in the movie, The Big Blue.

As more divers explore freediving as another method to experience the underwater world, they can take specialized course from the worlds best apnea divers. Performance freediving offers excellent courses on freediving and safety.

All underwater footage presented in Liquid Safari, The Fishes of Southern California was captured while freediving and all footage is of wild fishes in their wild, natural habitat.
